Description
I was painting during the 14th WORLDWIDE Paint Out Sept 9-11, 2016 GREAT WORLDWIDE PAINT OUT with the event organized by the Kingston School of Art. This is the fourth painting in that particular series.
I felt that I needed to venture away from the sail boats. Once again I did not have to go very far. The Kingston Penitentiary was just up the road and the KP had been an important Kingston landmark since it opened in 1835. The KP closed on September 30th, 2013.
I was really exposed while I did this painting. Tour and public transit buses roared along King Street. People walked by and a few did stop to take a look. I had to keep an eye on the sky. I knew a cold front was on the way. Showers and thunderstorms were expected to arrive by mid to late afternoon. The precipitation was right on time and the first large, convective splatters of rain hit the canvas along with my last few brush strokes. Sometimes I think it is best to work fast and not worry about polishing the strokes.
In August 1954, soldiers were called in to help quell a riot involving 900 inmates that would cause $2 million in damages. My father was a volunteer fire fighter and he was called in with other fire fighters to man the hoses and train them on the rioters. I was only just over a year old but somehow I remember the event either directly or through the retelling of the stories.

You know with my last name, this image would catch my attention. I enjoyed reading about your experience painting this, as well as the history of the penitentiary and your connection to it. Well done, both in the painting and the writing! L/F
Phil Chadwick replied:
Thank you Lori. You read the story too. Thank you! I have always included the story behind the painting. I think it is as important as the brush strokes. If I did not write it down, I would forget it and in a decade, those memories fade. It is easier now with computers. IU started with recipe cards back in 1967 :>))
