Description
In a swirl of movement, a dancer envelopes herself in joyful red.
Not for nothing is this artwork entitled Jubilee, celebrating the joy and movement and happiness and abandon of dance in the southwest desert – a place we generally do not associate with a dance performance.
But this is not a dance performance, one set before an audience in a musical hall, patrons who have spent a significant amount for a ticket and expect a top performance from a performing dancer.
This is a moment of spontaneity and creativity from a young woman who does not know that she is being watched, but who in a moment of freedom and exuberance swirls around, the sheer cloth around her body swirling with the movement, and exults in the sheer physicality of the movement, in her youth, in her future, in the joy of the presence.
As we all know, not all of us are dancers, feeling clumsy when we step this way and that, and self-conscious when people in the room watch us and secretly (so we are convinced) smirk at our efforts to be graceful and elegant. But we are all, like this young woman, dancers within, and the performance that we do is not for the people in the room who do or do not smirk at us – many of us, in moments of being alone, hear the music in our heads and set our feet to the movement and we do, indeed, dance – with no audience, with no critics, with no one to see or comment or give helpful tips on how we could do it better.
This is our moment of Jubilee – our time to express the joy that swells within us into dance, a joy so intense that it will not allow us to ignore it, but prompts us to forget, for the moment, that we cannot dance, and just . . . dance.
