Description
"I Won't Back Down" is a drawing I made on October 4 and 5, 2017, about various things that went on in September and October this year. There were two terrible earthquakes that devastated parts of Mexico, and there were three terrible hurricanes in the US Gulf States and Caribbean. A shooting massacre happened in Las Vegas on Oct 1, and rock musician Tom Petty died on Oct 2. Puerto Rico is still struggling to survive, after Hurricanes Irma and especially Maria, months after Maria's 190 mph winds pretty much wiped that island clean, along with her smaller islands and the US Virgin Islands.
Sadly, what these disasters all have in common is an inexcusable and horrific apathy from our President.
The death of Tom Petty seems out of sync with the other events, but he wrote and sang the song "I Won't Back Down," and that makes me think of the Resistance to the current political power in Washington. So yes, he belongs in this drawing, and many of us are still in shock that he's gone.
I made this piece for my online freehand drawing class that I taught at the time, Lucky Drawing 123, for my Assignment #3: "Sign." And I put myself signing petitions, as part of the drawing. That's one way to resist, to show that we're still here, determined to not let our country fall into the extreme hands of greed, bigotry, selfishness, racism, and cruelty.
i'm down in the bottom left corner, doing the sign language for "improve" or "healing." Your hands go flat on your chest, then pull out and up into fists, not as a gesture of violence, but of strength, like pulling capability out of your own heart, to get yourself going again!
The Buddha here is from an image I found from the Buddhist Temple in Las Vegas. I gave it a hurricane warning symbol to hold, to connect the events here and to send some peace to the survivors of hurricanes and earthquakes, and the stolen election. Namasté.
This drawing is 14"h x 22"w, ink, watercolor, color pencil on paper.
When I finish one of my big drawings, I randomly pick a paper fortune from a fortune cookie, to put on the drawing. This one says, "The time is right to make new friends."
I'm posting this drawing on Dec 3, 2017, and it's now well over 2 months since Maria smashed the Puerto Rican people on Sept 20 and 21. May the tide of caring and empathy turn to help those 3.5 million US citizens still struggling so much, still trying to get electric, shelter, water, and food, this long after being devastated by their second Cat 5 hurricane in two weeks. This is truly the fault of our President.
Impeach Trump.

PS. if you are ordering a print of this image, please look at the image in all the sizes of prints offered. Some will have parts of the sides of the image cut off, because of the size being a different proportion, that doesn't work as well with the image. If that doesn't bother you, that's fine, but if you want to see all of my drawing on the print, be patient and inspect each selection for cropped sides. Thanks!
