Description
I was painting during the 14th WORLDWIDE Paint Out Sept 9-11, 2016 GREAT WORLDWIDE PAINT OUT with the event organized by the Kingston School of Art. This is the third painting in that particular series.
The next sailing vessel to catch my eye in Portsmouth Harbour was the "Walrus V". Presumably there were four other walruses that preceded this particular boat. The name of the boat made me think of the 1967 Beatles movie called the Magical Mystery Tour and the song title that I used to name this painting. I enjoyed how a white-painted surface is never really white when one carefully observes the colours of the reflected light. The white hull took on the colours of the light reflected from the sky, water and wharf. I tired to be very economical with my brush strokes as well.
The walrus refers to Lewis Carroll's poem "The Walrus and the Carpenter" (from the book Through the Looking-Glass). John Lennon who wrote the song, expressed dismay upon belatedly realizing that the walrus was a villain in the poem.
