Description
Santa Clara, Northern California, USA - California Flannelbush (Fremontodendron californicum) is also known as California fremontia and flannel bush. It is native to California, western Arizona, and northern Baja California. It is a fast-growing evergreen shrub that reaches 6 to 12 feet and is drought tolerant. It has fuzzy flannel-like leaves due to the felting of bristly hairs on the underside, which can irritate a person's skin and eyes if they come into contact with it. The large, abundant, yellow blossoms with five webbed petals, that tend to bloom one at a time, with sepals that also acquire orange tints as they mature. Butterflies are attracted to these flowers. The wood of this bush was used for cordage and spears by the Native Americans. (Sources: www.calscape.org, www.wildflower.org, www.gardenia.net) There are many California Flannelbushes in the Ulistac Nature Area, which is about 40 acres of park along the Guadalupe River. It is the only dedicated natural open space in the City of Santa Clara. Beginning in 2001, hundreds of volunteers have spent many hours removing invasive species and instead planting California native trees, shrubs, grasses, and wildflowers. There are trails through most of the area, but no facilities.
